Hillary on Kosovoa

Here is Hillary’s statement on Kosovoa:

Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Kosova Independence

I welcome the historic declaration of Kosova independence issued today in Pristina. I urge our friends and allies and around the world to join the United States and European Union countries in promptly recognizing an independent Kosova.

This is a historic step that will allow the people of Kosova to finally live in their own democratic state. It will allow Kosova and Serbia to finally put a difficult chapter in their history behind them and to move forward. Resolving this issue has taken too long and has held both of these proud peoples back from pursuing a better European and Euro-Atlantic future. It is time now for all of us to look ahead and to focus on the challenge of building an independent Kosova and supporting a democratic Serbia in an integrated Europe.

I want to underscore the need to avoid any violence or provocations in the days and weeks ahead. Kosovars and Serbs have seen too much violence and too many provocations in the past. It is time to focus on improving the lives of people living in both countries and the integration of these countries into the West.

In recognizing the independence of Kosova, I want to stress the high importance that I attach to full protection of the rights of all minorities in Kosova, especially the Serbs, and to safeguard Serbian cultural and religious heritage sites in Kosova. The international community must stand firm on these points.

I remain concerned about the deterioration of the situation in neighboring Bosnia and urge the Bush Administration to pay more attention to this issue, so that it does not once again become a major threat to European stability.

I regret that it has taken so long for us to reach this historic juncture and that the Bush Administration has not always given the issues of Kosova, Serbia’s democratic future, and the Balkans the attention they deserve. This has helped contribute to the complicated and risky situation on the ground in the Balkans that we still face today. I look forward to working with the democratic leaders in this region and will once again make the full integration of the Western Balkans into Europe and the Euro-Atlantic community the priority it should be.

How is it that anyone could actually think Obama is a better candidate for president of the united states? I do not get that? I understand the youth vote — they, as a rule, don’t think experience counts for anything and their world isn’t much bigger than the community they live in. Nevertheless, I expect the adults, the mature ones, the ones who understand that this isn’t a popularity contest, I expect them to understand that the circumstances are far too serious and the job much too important to anoint an inexperienced, uninformed young man to handle the responsibility.

Being on the streets of Chicago, or in the Illinois senate, or getting a bill passed in the US Senate that means the budget has to be made available on the web (no matter how nice that is) doesn’t give someone the experience they need to be president of these United States. It doesn’t. I hope the great people of WI, HI, OH, TX, PA, RI, and all the rest, recognize that.

We are a nation at war and we need a president who can extricate us from conflict with the reasoned response of a statesperson.

Obama the messiah

February 11, 2008 by Ann

There’s beginning to be talk and honest to goodness journalism (albeit from an Australian news organization) about the cult that is Obama. We’re all in a bind here in America — how to save our nation from a terrible on-going entrenchment in Iraq, without tearing down one of the candidates that might be in the position to be running on that platform. But, Obama needs to be looked at, scrutinized — people really need to ask themselves if they want flash over substance, words over deeds. Hillary is the one who can win the election and get our progressive agenda accomplished. I’m not even sure Obama knows what’s on the agenda…but, that’s because he’s not good with paper.

Bringing red and blue together makes purple

February 3, 2008 by Ann

Obama says he can reach across the divide and bring the world together…okay, I’m exaggerating…I mean, bring America together to be one. There’s an article in the NY Times (Exeleon)  about how Obama brought legislation forward to address radioactive leaks at nuclear power agencies. The agency in question was able to effectively get him to reduce and eliminate all the “teeth” from the bill, and ultimately it died without passage.

This is why we need to elect Hillary Clinton. She can and will bring about the change we so desperately need.

Great debate

February 2, 2008 by Ann

Wow, didn’t Hillary do a great job in last night’s debate? She’s brilliant.

I don’t understand Obama’s argument regarding health insurance. He says the reason people don’t get health insurance is because they can’t afford it. I’m sure that’s true for some people and both Obama’s and Clinton’s plan will make low cost insurance available to those individuals.

The problems are those who don’t want insurance no matter the cost. They don’t want to pay out any amount of money every month and, as long as they stay well there’s no problem, however, there’s a catastrophic problem if  they are in an accident or develop a disabling disease. Obama says we’ll charge these people a penalty if they become sick. Depending on the size of the penalty, remaining uninsured may be worth the gamble.

The reason health insurance, and health care costs are so high is because we can’t afford the unisured getting sick. That’s the nature of the problem and Obama’s plan doesn’t address it. He hopes that everyone will get insurance, but that, like all things, just shows his naivete.

There’s a reason why so many states have passed seat belt and motorcycle helmet laws — because the costs of caring for people who don’t voluntarily protect themselves is greater than the cost of limiting individual freedom. It’s a bottom line issue.

And, Obama says that Hillary has never addressed the issue of what to do with people who don’t get insurance even though it’s mandated. I say, she’ll do the same thing he does to families who don’t insure their children or to individuals who don’t buy insurance and then become ill.

He’s so weak on this issue and yet, like his sexist language, so many remain oblivious to the mean and meaningless  words he speaks.

Uniting and not dividing

January 31, 2008 by Ann

Okay. Here’s the place we can talk politics every day, all the time. I felt bad clogging my writing blog with my political rants. This is better.

I should be clear though — I’m a strong Hillary supporter. Obama may give impressive speeches, but I find him be sexist and mean and dismissive towards women. In addition, so many of his supporters are aggressive and angry. After surviving 7 years of a president who says things like he’s a uniter not a divider, and he’s a compassionate conservative, while he’s neither, I’m hesitant to support a candidate who is running on the idea that he can bring the American people together when in fact he seems to be tearing us apart.

Isn’t that the real status quo?
